Taxon Description:
An evergreen or semi-evergreen rhizomatous shrub with hairy young shoots, sometimes tree-like and reaching 5 m tall, often found growing in dense thickets. Leaves elliptic to ovate, to 5 cm long, entire, undulate or with a few marginal teeth, dark green above, greyish beneath and hairy on both sides at least when young, more densely so beneath. Acorns ovoid to rounded, about 1 cm long, ripening in the summer of the first year
