Taxon Description:
This recently described species can be found in several collections and was grown from seeds collected by Allen Coombes in Veracruz, southern Mexico in 1995, but what is probably the same species was introduced earlier to Kew. It has proved fast growing and hardy has reached 8 m at the Hillier Gardens. The slender, ridged shoots bear lance-shaped, usually untoothed leaves to 18 × 4 cm, ending in a fine point, dark green above, paler beneath, glossy on both sides. Several flushes of coppery red young foliage are produced each year and at the Hillier Gardens the last flush can be damaged by winter frosts. It was originally thought to be Q. eugeniifolia Liebm., described from Costa Rica, a species from Central America that has distinctly toothed leaves. We have a good specimen of this species. It is in a protected position about 8 m high, with very attractive young leaves and is almost hardy. Another introduction of this species was made by Allen Coombes from Hidalgo, Mexico, in 2008.
