Group:
section Lobatae (the red oaks)
Species Parentage:
Q. crassifolia Bonpl. × Q. crassipes Bonpl.
Taxon Description:
This hybrid can often be found in areas of Mexico where the parent species grow together, and sometimes when only one of them is present. The leaves are very variable in shape but are often similar to those of Q. crassipes, though broader and more densely hairy beneath. They are also often toothed. It was first introduced by Allen Coombes in 1995 and grows vigorously in cultivation. We had a plant from this introduction which grew rapidly to about 6 m and was one of our star exhibits. It snapped off at the roots one stormy night in 2006. Subsequent investigation established that it had a very inadequate root system for such a vigorous fast growing tree so it would never have reached maturity. We have recently acquired a good replacement about 2 m high which has survived its first winters satisfactorily. We hope it will emulate its predecessor.
