Taxon Description:

An evergreen tree that can reach 10 m or more, though it can sometimes be much smaller and shrubby in exposed rocky places. Shoots downy at first, becoming smooth. The leathery, obovate leaves are up to 7 cm long and are edged with small teeth towards the tip. They are grey-hairy when young, becoming glossy dark green and smooth above. Acorns to 2 cm long, ripening in the second year, borne singly or in pairs in cups densely covered in slender scales. Introduced to Kew in 1992, it was later received by Hillier Gardens in 1998 as Q. spinosa, where it has reached 3.5 m.We have one attractive tree planted in 1991. It is a vigorous and hardy tree about 3 m high and in most years is the first tree in the collection to produce new leaves. We also have some smaller, newer specimens. This oak is well worth growing.MHA: What happened to the '1991' tree? Did it die?
