Taxon Description:
An evergreen tree reaching 20 m with dark bark cracked into square plates. In the wild they are normally shed just before the young leaves appear. Acorns ripening the second year, ovoid, to 1.2 cm long. The name commemorates English botanist and plant collector Edward (Eduardus) Palmer (1829 - 1911) who collected the type specimen in Mexico in 1896.
