Group:
subgenus Cyclobalanopsis
Taxon Description:
Sometimes confused with Q. myrsinifolia, but it differs in its broader leaves, hairy beneath. Sadly its attractive, bronze new growth emerges very early in the year and can then be damaged by spring frosts, but it is worth growing for its young foliage alone. Widely distributed across Eastern Asia, it was introduced in 1804 and has reached 16 m at Borde Hill. Some plants obtained here under this name have proved to be Q. myrsinifolia, but the true species is now represented by small plants in our nursery.
