Taxon Description:
A rounded evergreen tree to 15 m tall, sometimes shrubby with several stems from the base. The slender, glabrous shoots bear lanceolate leaves to 10 cm long, ending in a long, tapered point and shallowly toothed above the middle. They emerge bronze when young becoming glossy dark green above and blue-green and glabrous beneath. Acorns ovoid to 2.5 cm long, ripening in the first year, with several arranged on a stalk to 5 cm long, the cup with 7-9 concentric scales. This very hardy species performs better in this country than any other member of the subgenus Cyclobalanopsis. Although sometimes regarded as synonymous with Q. glauca, it is quite distinct. The young foliage emerges late in spring and escapes damage by late frosts. Introduced by the noted plant collector Robert Fortune in 1854, it has reached 11 m in the grounds of South Lodge Hotel, Horsham, West Sussex. We have two of these trees which tend to be multi-stemmed. The biggest of them has made a very fine and rounded tree.
