Taxon Description:
A slow-growing evergreen or semi-evergreen tree reaching 15 m or more in the wild, where it grows on dry slopes, grasslands and oak/pine woodland. The rigid shoots, often reddish when young, bear glossy green oblong leaves to 9 cm long. Downy when young, they become smooth above and sparsely hairy beneath and are edged with sparse teeth or entire. Acorns ovoid to oblong, to 2 cm long, ripening in the first year, and borne singly or in pairs in shallow cups. It has reached 8 m at Hillier Gardens.We have two small young planted-out specimens of this elegant oak, the tallest at 3 m.
