Taxon Description:

This evergreen tree can reach 15 m or more in the wild but is often seen as a small tree or large shrub growing in evergreen oak and pine forests. The young shoots are densely covered in grey hairs becoming glabrous. Leaves elliptic to obovate, to 10 cm long, edged with short teeth above the centre. They are rigid and leathery, glossy dark green above and densely covered beneath with a thick, bright white tomentum. Acorns ovoid-oblong to 1.5 cm long, but often much less, ripening in the first or second year and are borne singly or in small clusters on a short stalk. Introduced in 1990 or before, it has reached 6 m at Tregrehan, Cornwall. We have two small trees, one of over 1 m. They both look to be established.
