Taxon Description:
An evergreen tree reaching 20 m tall in the wild, where it is found in mountain forests. The leathery ovate to lanceolate leaves are up to 20 cm long and end in a long, tapered point. They are bronze and silky hairy when young, becoming smooth and glossy dark green above, blue-green beneath, the numerous veins ending in short pointed teeth. Acorns ovoid to nearly rounded to 2 cm long, ripening in the first year and borne singly or in small clusters on stalks to 5 cm long. The cup bears 6-8 toothed concentric scales. Introduced by the notable plant collector Ernest ?Chinese? Wilson in 1900, it has reached 10 m at Caerhays, Cornwall. An introduction from Guizhou, China, is 8 m at Hillier Gardens twelve years after planting. This oak, planted in 1998, grows well here and is over 4 m. The leaves persist through the winter and it is one of the best Chinese oaks that we have grown.
