Taxon Description:

A remarkable, large, very hardy evergreen tree reaching 30 m in its native habitat, where it grows in oak/pine forests at high altitudes. I has stout shoots, downy when young. Short-stalked leathery leaves, to 10 cm long, ovate to oblong and untoothed, but edged with spiny teeth on young plants and juvenile shoots. They are glossy dark green above and densely covered with yellow-brown hairs beneath when young, becoming green. Acorns rounded to 2.5 cm long, ripening in the second year and borne stalkless or on short stalks, singly or in pairs. This is the best known of a group of closely related species which are often confused with each other. Introduced in 1894 by C. Gilbert Rogers and in 1900 by James S. Gamble, both of the Dehra Dun Forestry School, India. A tree from the earlier collection has reached 21 m at Tregrehan, Cornwall.
