Taxon Description:
An evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub or small tree growing to 5 m tall or more, and found in hillside scrub. The obovate leaves to 4 cm long are narrowed to the base and rounded at the tip, either entire or with few a spiny teeth, although on juvenile plants leaves tend to be rounded at the base and more spiny. They are glossy green and smooth above, paler with sparse hairs beneath. The conical acorns taper to a point at the tip and ripen in the first year, borne singly or in pairs. Only described in 1994, this species was introduced to the UK by Allen Coombes in 1997 following the 2nd International Oak Conference in California. We have two plants of this species planted out - both small bushes, the largest 1 m tall. It grows very slowly but appears completely hardy - rather surprising as it comes from frost-free areas.
