Taxon Description:

A very distinct and hardy evergreen tree of bushy, spreading or upright habit, sometimes a shrub, growing up to 15 m tall. The short-stalked leathery leaves are ovate to obovate with small, blunt teeth above the middle and up to 6 cm long on downy shoots. They are bronze when young becoming glossy dark green above, paler and glossy beneath and nearly smooth on both sides. Acorns ovoid to 2 cm long, ripening in the second year, borne singly or in pairs on a stalk to 4 cm long. The specific epithet derives from the resemblance of the foliage to that of Phillyrea latifolia. Introduced in 1861, it has reached 10 m at Caerhays, Cornwall. As well as one free-standing tree of about 5 m tall, we have this species planted as a 2.5 m hedge near the sheep dip. Another specimen is maintained as a 5 m large and dense clipped bush.
