Taxon Description:
An intricately branched evergreen shrub to about 2 m tall with densely hairy shoots forming thickets on mountain slopes. The thick leathery leaves, oblong to ovate, to 2.5 cm long, are glossy dark green with scattered hairs above and have a dense felt of white hairs beneath. They are borne on a very short stalk and have a wavy or sparsely toothed margin, which is often rolled under the leaf. Acorns ovoid, about 1 cm long, borne singly or in pairs on a short stalk and ripening in the first year. This interesting species is very rare in cultivation.Planted here in 1993 from seed collected in Texas, it has been slowing growing but has made a healthy bush of about 1.5 m tall and has proven to be hardy.
